Hats are a cultural symbol: a form of communication, a sign of belonging and an embodiment of style. Aesthetics understood as a necessity, it is a close dialogue between the past and the future and between dreams and reality. The Borsalino SS 2020 collection incorporates all of this, drawing inspiration from the Arts and Crafts Movement that appeared in Britain at the end of the 19th century, marking the rise of the middle class and the birth of design.
Giacomo Santucci, Creative Curator of this historic Italian Alessandria based hat brand founded in 1857, has put together a real empire of signs, drawing references from the Crystal Palace’s iron whorls designed by Joseph Paxton for London’s 1851 Great Exhibition and that first appeared on a selection of Borsalino scarves and headwear in all shapes and materials for both men and women.
The collection features over 160 models with leading materials such as: crochet Raffia; hand-painted Panama hats; and an innovated selection of mixed fabrics like plaited hemp/ cotton, braided paper, and denim; as well as the range of classic Panama and Montecristo pieces.
There are collection details that are really all about jewels for the head. Highlighted elements range from a metal tiara band décor to jeweled hat pins that can also be changed into patches. The unique tulip-shaped model with feathers express a sense of aesthetic belonging, inspired by English architect and designer Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo’s Century Guild of Artists, with hints of thistle detailing reflective of the historic noble British order of chivalry, second in importance only to the Order of Garter.
Other strong pieces include a panorama of Fez and Fedora styles, classic summer Panama hats and fresh baseball caps in cotton with plexiglass brims in the brightest colors of freedom. The forage cap is entirely covered in micro pearls, a homage to the hat worn by Karl Lagerfeld in the early 1980s. The unmissable narrow straw hat shaped by a leather corset with sculptural lines is part of the collection inspired by a quote from Oscar Wilde: “One should either be a work of art, or wear a work of art.” Other notable models such as the range of typically French hats (Basque beret, Flic and Motard) acquire Hollywood glamour with a cascade of sequins, echoing Lady Gaga and her claim: “I’m just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time.” The Bogart by Borsalino style for SS 2020 contains the phrase: “A character has to be slightly nuts, and I suppose I am.” Finally, there is the silk turban, an inseparable accessory for exquisitely chic women like Elsa Schiaparelli.
In short, there’s a whole world in your head that you can now wear with your hat.
