Digital News Fashion appreciated that DAKS AW 2019-20 looked at the harmonized elegance of the 1970s. DAKS celebrates the elegance of the English evening for Autumn/Winter 2016/17. The classic dinner jacket and its variants are redesigned with an ironic and irreverent twist and produced in fabrics that have always been synonymous with English elegance.
Black velvet, evening satin and moiré give full expression to the dandy spirit of the collection, combined with georgette and chiffon that feature on shirts that are enhanced by a plastron either in ton sur ton or in contrasting materials or colors.
Knitwear is exquisite – in the best DAKS tradition: cashmere, alpaca and mohair serve as a precious canvas on which is painted a unique design, hand-fashioned by an Italian artist. There are touches of an abstract template that makes direct reference to the world of art.
We loved the nice space for the show, the pictures on the screen, the public in the interior – it was a very laid back event. »
This year DAKS is celebrating its 125th anniversary. 125 years of elegance, refinement and consistency.
The collection is inspired by British literature and in particular three influential British writers and their most important works, masterpieces which have been translated into films and plays.
One of these is The Remains of the Day, a 1989 novel by Nobel-Prize winning British writer Kazuo Ishiguro and the later film adaptation by James Ivory. The exquisite English setting of the Manor House where the story takes place provides the inspiration for the show backdrop and the collection which is characterized by a feeling of relaxed British elegance.
The collection references the beautiful landscape and the distinct seasonal changes throughout the autumn and winter months. The colours and silhouettes within the collection depict not only the landscape and seasons but capture the distinctive atmosphere and character that is undeniably British.
This ‘Britishness’ is also apparent through the materials and fabric designs, using the historic DAKS archives as a reference point, importantly prompting us to reflect upon the roots and origins of the brand.
The collection features various types of check in different dimensions and colours, pinstripes, micro and macro herringbone, as well as flowers reminiscent of Gauguin paintings. Printing these designs on both lightweight and heavyweight fabrics has also created a quirky quintessentially British “mix and match” effect.
With this in mind, the focal point within the collection once again is the Anniversary Check: a special design specifically created to celebrate this memorable occasion, which can be found in both our outerwear and knitwear.
The knitwear has been created using high-quality fibers, such as merino, cashmere and special mohair, while using a particular raising treatment for enhanced softness, warmth and comfort. As an iconic element of British knitwear, we also pay homage to the classic argyle pattern throughout the knitwear range.
Creating a synergy between the menswear and womenswear looks has been fundamental to the story behind the AW19 collection. There is a cross over in colours, fabrics and yarns that appear throughout the collection.
The bags, for both men and women, in line with the collection, are in both matt leather and in the fabrics of the garments in the collection and feature details in the same leathers.
The general cut, for both men and women, neither alters nor distorts the lines of the body, creating a fit that celebrates the silhouette in its most classic form.
